Does Guinea Pig Need Vaccination?

Guinea pigs luckily don’t require any vaccinations, However, we recommended that every pet owner take their guinea pig to a specialise guinea pig VET at least once a year for a routine checkup.

Good news first: other pets like dogs, rabbits, and cats require vaccination against diseases like myxomatosis. Guinea pigs, on the other hand, do not require vaccination against such diseases

A regular vet check-up for your precious guinea pig is vital as its the only way to keep their health in check. Your preferred vet also needs to have experience with guinea pigs for better results. 

Apart from the regular vet check-ups, their diet needs to consist of a lot of vitamin C. Guinea pigs do not generate vitamin C on their own. Lack of vitamin C causes scurvy. Additionally, your pet might have ulcers on the gums and eventually start losing teeth. Lack of treatment can be fatal. 

Signs to look out for illnesses

Even if you do not visit the vet on a weekly or monthly basis, you need to be keen on your pet’s body every day. This will allow you to catch any signs of changes in time. 

Some of the changes to look out for include:

  • The change on the color of their fur
  • Any injuries
  • A drastic change in their weight
  • Any difficulties in breathing
  • Any limping or an abnormal walking style
  • Dental issues like long teeth, swelling or sore gums
  • Lack of appetite 
  • Arched posture 
  • Discharge from the nose or eyes
  • Diarrhea

Guinea pigs mostly suffer from pneumonia because they are carriers of the virus. Since this virus is opportunistic, it remains active in the body and multiplies with time. When the opportunity strikes, it blows into a disease. 

Pneumonia mostly affects young, and nursing guinea pigs, those under acute stress levels, or one already suffering from some other ailment and is weak. 

The symptoms to look out for include:

  • Lack of appetite 
  • Trouble in breathing
  • Sneezing 
  • Discharges from the nose and eyes 


The digestive system of guinea pigs is sensitive, where their gastrointestinal tract has significant amounts of bacteria. These bacterias are useful in that they assist in the digestion process. A frequent change in their diet or infection will throw these bacteria off balance. It can lead to issues like slow digestion, gassing, diarrhea, or be fatal. 

The symptoms to look out for include:

  • Low appetite
  • Dehydration 
  • Low body temperature 
  • Depression
  • Lethargy 
  • Watery or loose stool 

Signs Of Scurvy In Guinea Pigs

If you do not give your guinea pig enough vitamin c, then he/she will suffer from scurviness. Scurviness can make your guinea pig: 

  • Anemic
  • Exhausted
  • Experience painful limbs
  • swell in some body parts
  • Have no appetite 
  • Diarrhearing
  • Discharges from the nose and eyes 
  • Lethargy 

Do guinea pigs need worming?

Although guinea pigs do not need any vaccinations, they do unfortunately need to go through the process of being wormed. This usually happens every 4 months through an animal wormer that can be included in their water.
