What Sound Does A Rat Make?

One of the ways to tell whether your home has an infestation of rats is by listening to the sounds rats make. Rats have a combination of three sounds:

  • Squeaking
  • Hissing
  • Chattering

The three noises communicate different emotions. Squeaking and hissing, for example, are the noises the rat will make when in pain or is afraid. You will hear the chattering noise when the rat is grinding its teeth or trying to chew and gnaw through stuff. Additionally, rats make scratching and rustling noises when moving around.

The best time to listen to these noises is at night. Rats are nocturnal animals, and while humans are sleeping at night, rats are keeping busy.

Where Do Rats Hide?

If there are rats in your home, then they have already set a nesting place in your house. Rats like dark places. Any dark areas in your house that could act as comfortable shelters for rats are where you should listen to the noises. These places include:

  • Basements
  • Ceilings
  • Attics
  • Walls
  • Garage
  • Laundry room

How Do Rats Get Into Houses?

Rats are tiny and can get through areas with holes the size of a quarter. Most entry points for rats are:

  • Chimney pipes
  • Roof vents
  • Utility pipes
  • Holes on the walls
  • Poor sealings on windows and doors

Roof rats, however, will not use any of these entry points to gain access to your house. These rats can climb through walls and trees. If there are any tree branches, ivy or vines growing around your home, then roof rats can use them to enter into your house.

How To Keep Rats Away

The secret to keeping away rats is keeping your homestead clean and sealing up any entry points. You can seal up any openings on doors, walls, ceilings, and pipings with steel wool.

Since rats are attracted to unhygienic areas, you should clear any shrubs, leaf pilings and deep mulch around your home. Also, trim any tree branches and vines around your house, so roof rats don’t have an access point to your house.

Another way to keep rats away from your food is to ensure they have no food to eat. That means clearing any garbage areas in your house. If you have garbage, keep it in airtight containers that rats can’t access. Any food, too, leftovers or not, must be stored in sealed containers. If there are leaky pipings and faucets within your home, then fix them. It will ensure that rats do not have water.

How To Get Rid Of Rats

While you can do everything possible to keep rats aways, sometimes, it might be beyond your control. During winter and fall seasons, for example, rats will seek shelter in warm places, and your house might be that safe place for them.

All you can do then is use other methods to get rid of rats like using pesticides. Depending on the pesticide you go for, the rat can die within hours or days.

One way to know if your house has rats is to be aware of what sound does a rat make. Even if you do not see other signs like droppings and gnawing on your items, squeaking, hissing, and chattering noises might be signs of a rat infestation in your home.
